In ancient cultures, the cowrie shell represented the Divine vulva and the idea of rebirth. There is some speculation also that it may symbolize the Eye of Horus, and Ancient Protection Amulet for the Evil Eye. Skeletons as far back as 20,000 B.C. have been found lavishly decorated with cowrie shells, and cowries used to encourage rebirth decorated Egyptian sarcophagi. The Romans knew the cowrie as Matriculus, and this is where we get the word matriculate. Cowries were the Roman symbol of the Alma Mater, which translates to " Soul Mother" In the past, cowries were important symbols in Khemet, Greece, Rome, Polynesia, and the Middle East where they were associated with the Goddess Astarte. Today, Cowries are revered in West African culture. Cowries represent the fertility of Yemoya-Olokun, the creator deity. Also when Hunters and Warriors wear their clothing, they can be told apart by all of the ornamentation on their garments, than that of the normal citizens. Their garments are heavily laden with amulets, animal teeth, claws, horns, cowrie shells, and bits of glass. The sacred clothing help the warrior blend in spiritually and psychically with the wilderness. They have been (and still are) used for currency, divination, ornamentation, and in rites of passage. Today the cowrie shell is a symbol of Black people around the Globe, indicating our connection to the earth, sea and to the Motherland. Cowrie shells are also symbols of purity, cleansing, and new beginnings, so they are often quite relevent used in an ancestor inspired wedding.
