This kit is enough to do a fairly large seat, as pictured below. Basic Instructions for Replacing Pressed Cane Carefully use a sharp razor knife to score a line on the outer edge of the spline where it meets the wood. You may need to make two or three passes to achieve a good separation between the spline and the wood. This will prevent the spline from damaging the wood as you remove it. It's also helpful if you can score the inner edge of the spline where it meets the old cane. Using a chisel that is narrower than the spline, tap the chisel down into the spline and then slowly lift up the spline by pressing down on the chisel handle. After the chisel is almost parallel to the spline, start tapping on the chisel with a hammer, and proceed to remove the spline all the way around the seat. You will have to adjust the angle of your chisel as you work to get the best results, occasionally prying up the spline. Be very careful not to damage the wood of the chair seat. With sharp cutters, remove as much of the inside portion of cane as you can. Clean out the entire groove of all cane, glue and spline. Soak the new cane & spline in water 20 to 30 minutes, then thoroughly shake out the excess water. Center the cane on the seat opening. Cut away any excess cane so that there is no more than 1 to 2 inches of overlap. Carefully remove any unneeded strands that will be outside the groove. This will make the installation easier, and will minimize damage to the strands that are pressed down into the groove. Gently tap one wedge at center front and one at center back. Next insert one wedge on each side. Double check your alignment after each wedge is inserted. Leaving the 4 wedges in place, use a 5th wedge to gently press the rest of the cane, until all the cane is in the groove. Trim excess to below groove edge. This can be done with a SHARP 1.5" chisel or a set of angle tipped nippers. Any broken strands on the edge can be rewoven with a scrap piece. Size wet spline to groove, trim to fit. Put a thin trail of glue in groove before inserting sized spline. Tap it in, using the wedge as a buffer. Let dry completely for 24 hours. Seat will tighten on its own to a good tension.
