Chiengora Raw Spinning Fibre - Maremma Sheepdog 200 grams of combed undercoat. Spins like a dream, just right to add to that next spinning project. The color is white to light cream Pet wool has many enduring qualities: 8 times warmer than wool Insulates even when wet Beautiful to handle soft Repels water when spun with its guard hair 'Fuzzy' look reminiscent to a mohair look This wool has come directly off dogs in my care, combed and bagged, and can be spun directly from bag. All proceeds go directly back towards keeping our 'Maremmas In Rescue'! If you have any questions feel free to email me. Dog hair is considered a luxury fibre like mohair and cashmere, its called Chiengora (pronounced she-an-gora). Chien is French for dog and gora is from angora. Dog hair is warm, sheds water and its most striking feature is its fluffy-like mohair appearance when added to a garment. For warmth it's hard to beat and it actually it feels warmer as the temperature drops. Because of this quality, garments made from dog hair are more comfortably worn in cool to cold temperatures and because it is also somewhat water-repellent and it insulates well in cold damp weather. Spinning dog hair is an ancient art that is being rediscovered in our age of 'reduce-reuse-recycle'. As more people are learning the art of spinning, the use of dog hair is becoming more popular. The softest yarn comes from the combed undercoats of double-coated breeds. One of those breeds is the Maremma Sheepdog - its' long white hair is perfect for spinning and making into warm winter wear. It is best to spin on its own (one ply) and ply together with another fibre eg wool, alpaca, or alternatively you can add it to other fibre whilst spinning the ply to get that 'mohair' look. Chiengora can be handwashed or dry cleaned just like any other woollen garment. And no, it doesn't smell like a dog! Is the collection process humane???? YES! All hair that is collected is undercoat. It's shed (or moulted) naturally and gathered when brushed/combed out. The process doesn't harm the dog, at all, in fact, brushing helps keep the dog's coat healthy and in good condition! and most dogs love it :))) ! I have quite a few lots available, if you require more, please feel free to contact and I can list them.
