DTAL Breast Cancer Awareness"Think Pink" Listing Contest 9/29-10/6Be sure to search for DTAL to find great bargins! Assorted Colors of Dryer LintGray - Blue & Pink! Many Uses & RecipesThat's right. There are many great uses for dryer lint. Dryer lint can be found in the craft stores, you get a pinch of it about the size of a half dollar neatly packaged for around $5.00, just think how much gets thrown away. I have included some uses and recipes I found just by doing a search for "uses of dryer lint", maybe it will inspire you to be creative and recycle what normally gets thrown away. Dryer lint is highly flammable and may contain some chemical residues from laundry products or foreign fibers, so for safety concerns please keep in mind how it will be used. Stuffing Handmade Items Dryer lint is a great stuffing for small dolls and teddy bears the bears smell great and are soft and washable. Especially good for getting the stuffing in corners and small places, and you can pack it to make it as soft or firm as you'd like. Some even use it as batting or stuffing in quilts. Worms Or Compost Dryer lint can make great food for worms! Toss it into your local friendly worm farm or into a compost heap and it'll be turned into lovely healthy soil for your garden! Use dryer lint when planting, lay dryer lint in the hole dug for your plant or wrap around plants when putting in garden. This keeps moisture in and really helps roots of the plants, especially in a dry season as the lint holds the water. Nesting & Bedding Some place dryer lint outside so birds have easy access to it, they love to weave it into their nest. However, some are saying that the chemical residue left in the lint could be harmful to birds - so you'll need to research or use your own judgement when making this available to animals. Insulation Stuff your old tube socks with dryer lint and you’ve got yourself a great draft stopper. Place the stuffed socks on the floor in front of your door to keep out the cold air in the winter. To make it decorative for the Holiday's why not use some of those Christmas socks you never wear. If needed you could stitch socks together to make a longer tube to fit larger windows and doors. Or just use colors that blend in with your decor or theme of the room. Make "Handmade" Paper Yes, you can use dryer lint and even dryer sheets to make paper. There are several ways to make homemade paper and you can research or experiment to find what works best. One option is to put your dryer lint into a blender along with some old shredded paper. Soak the paper and lint with water, wait fifteen minutes. Blend the mixture on medium speed to make what is called a slurry. Pour your paper and lint mixture onto a screen and shape your paper. Press the excess water out of the paper and allow it to dry. Also you'll find kits sold in craft stores to aid in making paper. Artwork A beautiful picture made from lint was once on display at a Ripley's Believe It Or Not Museum. Dryer Lint Clay Ingredients: 1 1/2 cups lint from the dryer 1 cup water 1/2 cup flour 2 drops wintergreen mint flavoring Old newspaper Paint Directions: Place the lint in a saucepan and cover it with the water. When the lint is saturated, add the flour and stir until it is smooth. Add the drops of wintergreen oil flavoring. Cook the mixture, stirring constantly, until it forms peaks and holds together. Pour it onto newspaper to cool. Shape and model figures, or cover a form with it, such as a balloon. Allow to dry for 3 to 5 days, then paint and decorate as required. Also, you can create art by mixing 1/2 cup of flour with 1 cup of liquid starch, then add to dryer lint as needed to form shapes on a piece of plywood. Continue adding various shapes and colors, mixing with the liquid starch recipe as needed for the right texture. Allow to dry thoroughly, spray with sealer. If you use your imagination you can make an impressive piece of art. Others will admire your work and not know what it is made from if you do it right. You are only limited to your imagination when it comes to your creations! Fire Starter Use dryer lint if you have a fireplace or wood stove. The lint ignites quickly to help set kindling ablaze. You can fill cardboard egg crates with lint and cover them with melted wax to keep lint clean and dry until you are ready to use it. Or, stuff toilet paper, paper towel and wrapping paper tubes with dryer lint and newspaper. Put some in a large zip lock bag and pack them with your camping gear, keeping them in the ziplock bag will keep them clean, dry and ready to burn when needed. Wrap those cardboard tubes with scrap pieces of gift wrap (we always have left scrap pieces) and place in a basket near the fireplace, this way you have a decorative item that is ready for use when needed. So if you have a fireplace or go camping, don't throw out that dryer lint. Be careful when you burn dryer lint. How it burns will depend VERY much on what the lint is made out of! Anything manmade will melt, smoke, smell like burning plastic, and other fumes. Cotton, wool, or linen dryer lint, on the other hand, is fine. To test it, take some outside in your driveway and burn it. If it turns into little hard beads, don't put it in your fireplace. This auction is for a huge amount of dryer lint as pictured. It includes various colors of gray, blue, and pink. As you have noticed when doing laundry, there may be some foreign objects in the lint such as hair, dirt, or anything else that may get left in pockets. So I can't say for sure exactly what may be included in the mixture that is known as dryer lint.
