It is actually an inexpensive double-thread canvas that provides a temporary countable surface on a non-evenweave faric. The 'waste' canvas is basted on the front of the garment or fabric to be cross stitched on. ONE UNSPAYED FEMALE can have TWO litters per year. Multiply this by 10 pups (or kittens or piglets) per litter and assume there are 5 unspayed females per litter. This equals 20 unspayed females per year for a single mother cat, dog, or piglet, including 10 females. Each UNSPAYED FEMALE can have TWO litters per year times 10 offspring per litter (assume again that there are 5 unspayed female offspring per litter). This equals 20 more pups or kittens or piglets per year for each female: 1 female x 2 litters of 10 offspring per year x 1/2 being female = 10 female offspring. 10 females x 2 litters of 10 offspring per year x 1/2 being female = 100 female offspring. 100 females x 2 litters of 10 offspring per year x 1/2 being female = 1000 female offspring .... This equation is infinite - endless - and can create more than a million puppies or kittens or piglets PER SINGLE UNSPAYED FEMALE. Unaltered males are one of the biggest reasons for the Million Puppy / Million Kitten Phenomenon. Some people tend to believe the male pet cannot get out of the house or the fence or however they are contained. An unneutered male pet will get out of the most secure enclosure to get to a female pet in heat. When the fun is over, maybe a week later, the pets find themselves lost and cannot find their way home. They either starve to death, catch and spread diseases, or get a free ride to Animal Control. When (usually IF) the pet owner locates the pet at Animal Control, the fines are often so high that the pet owner leaves the pet to be put to death by Animal Control. It is an ugly and vicious cycle. In Tucson, Arizona, our Animal Care Center (aka The Pound) euthanizes (puts to sleep) approximately 1000 unwanted dogs and cats every MONTH (it was 600 just a few years ago so the problem is only getting worse!!!!!!! PLEASE have your pets spayed or neutered. If you cannot afford this, contact your vet, animal control center, or your local Humane Society to learn about low cost or free spay and neuter opportunities! There are so many animal welfare volunteer organizations in every community, and now online, who are working to curb these heart-wrenching numbers (found-pets.org, Petfinders.com, ironwoodpigsanctuary.org, etc). But they cannot do it without your help! Spay or neuter your pets. Offer to pay the vet bill for a friend or neighbor who cannot afford to alter their pet. Volunteer at a rescue organization. Donate pet food to your local food bank. Carry dog biscuits in your car to help lure lost pets to you, then get them to shelter. Take action. Report a ROAD HAZZARD to 911 when you see a dead animal in the road to prevent disease and accidents. Call Animal Control when you see a homeless pet roaming the streets. Take in a lost pet and seek out its owner. Your opportunities are endless and the rewards are boundless. She was dragging her starved little body down the side of the road on the Tohono O'Odham Indian Reservation in Tucson, Arizona. Three cars in front of me passed her by without ever even hitting their brakes in contemplation of helping her ........ Auldie had a broken leg and a broken tail, her face was mauled, her throat was ripped open (most likely from a tussle with a javelina) and she was so pregnant she looked like an olive on a toothpick. She had been eating rocks and sticks to survive, as was evident by the little 'pile' she left by the front door her first night in our home - someone had obviously house-broken her and, even in her sad state, she tried to get outside to 'do her thing.' On January 3, 1999, just 2 days after we found her, Auldie gave birth to 9 puppies. Her leg could not be fixed so it sort of hangs there. Her tail has a permanent bend. Her face bears the scars of many incidents where she had to defend herself and, luckily, her neck has mended. And, for all the 'ugly' that she has endured, Auldie is the exact replica of the most gentle, most loving, playful, yet protective, pet people describe when they go out looking for that 'perfect' pet. No pedigree. No specific breed. Just a dog that someone probably got as a 'cute' puppy, took the time to house-break, then got tired of and 'dumped.'
