Ever since I heard about them, I've been fascinated by Eugene and Ann Bourgeois, the Canadian founders of Philosopher's Wool. I've been inspired by the 'folly' of Eugene, who started the company to increase the price farmers were paid for their fleeces and, against the advice of those who 'knew better', came up with a wonderful woolen yarn that is not cleaned by harsh chemicals but by a more natural process and is therefore less irritating to people who have found themselves allergic to other wools. Not only that, but he came up with some of the prettiest naturalistic wool yarns I've seen--warm, heathery colors that make you think of a log cabin in the mountains. I've also always found myself fascinated by the 'two-handed' fair isle sweaters Philosopher's Wool has become famous for. They remind me of kaleidoscopes--those shards of beautiful color dancing with one another is gorgeous intricate patterns--One word... Wow! I thought these sweaters would be too detailed, too difficult, too frustrating. Well, a while ago, I happened across a Philosopher's Wool Color Your Own Kit at a LYS a friend of mine owned. I traded her for it, and an obsession was born! PW's two-handed method is easy to learn; the pattern couldn't be more straightforward, and knitting round and round with all those colors is fast and more fun than getting the really big new box of crayons when you were a kid!
